Why are they upgrading?
The current fleet is 55 years old and in desperate need of replacing. The new boats will provide more space (14% more space with the capability to carry up to 150 passengers), facilities specifically designed for cyclists and they will be much quieter with low emission engines.
There will be many benefits once the upgrades are completed including an improved and reliable service, much more space for passengers and vehicles, accessibility and magnetic technology making it much more stable when boarding and disembarking the ferry. They will meet the London Low Emission Zone standards due to the diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system and filtering systems.
Back in 2015 the future of The Woolwich Ferry was in doubt as it faced a very real possibility of closure. A huge petition helped keep the ferry crossing open, with over 10,000 people signing in order to save the crossing. This massive upgrading programme will help transform the aging infrastructure and ferries into an efficient and more environmentally friendly service. Hopefully this should see the Woolwich Ferry service continue to run for many more decades to come.
